FAQ

What are NW Photo School workshops?

NW Photo School workshops are hands on photography learning experiences for a very affordable price designed to enhance your picture taking skills. Participants receive hands on instruction from a working photography professional in carefully selected visually rich locations.

When are NW Photo School workshops?

NW Photo School workshops generally take place year round. We select locations based on seasonal opportunities, fairs and festivals, and weather considerations.

How much do NWPhotoschool Workshops cost?

They begin at only $99. Most photography workshop usually costs much more! Some of our workshops may also have admission fees, and we do ask that you tip the street performers if you photograph them.

What variety of workshops do you offer?

We offer Photo workshops for intermediate and advanced photographers in travel photography, location photography, portrait photography, landscape photography and more.

Who can attend?

NW Photo School workshops are perfect for those who have a good general knowledge of their Point and Shoot or DSLR camera, but would like to become more proficient. We offer workshops designed for the Intermediate level, as well as the Advanced level photographer.

If you are just starting out, once you have read your camera manual, and have a good working understanding of it's features, settings and functions, an Intermediate workshop would be the perfect way to learn more!

NW Photo School workshops are also a fun learning experience for everyone in your family. They also make great gifts for those who wish to treat a loved one or close friend.

Can my children attend?

Yes, although we do ask that they are 14 years of age or older. The workshops are an excellent opportunity for your child to develop their creative skills. All children must be paid attendees. Because we can't adequately watch your child while teaching, children under 18 must be accompanied by a fully paid adult attendee.

Are advanced reservations required?

Yes. Please make a reservation online in advance of the class you wish to attend. We cannot guarantee a spot to attendees who show up without a confirmed reservation. If you are having problems signing up, please contact us directly via our website.

Can I cancel or reschedule a workshop reservation?

We have a 72 hour advance cancellation policy. We've tried to keep this as short as possible, while still allowing us enough lead time to replace your spot. Because space in each workshop is limited, canceling and/or rescheduling leaves workshop spaces that could have been filled by other attendees. Thank you for your understanding on this policy.

To reserve space on a NW Photo School workshop , payments must be made in full. Payments must be made by check or PayPal's secure merchant website by credit card or direct bank transfer. NW Photo School reserves the right to cancel a reservation if full payment has not been received by 72 hours prior to the workshop. All cancellation notices must be received in writing or confirmed email and will become effective as of the date of the postmark or email. There are no refunds for cancellations 72 hours or less prior to departure. Refunds may be used as credit toward a future workshop on a space available basis.

How long are NW Photo School workshops?

Most workshops are 3 hours long, enough to really spend some time with us learning with our hands-on approach, but still short enough to give you time to practice on your own.

How large are the workshop groups?

We accept a maximum of 10 people. If fewer than 5 people sign up, we will either refund your workshop cost or give you the opportunity to sign up for another scheduled workshop, as you wish.

Where do NW Photo School workshops meet?

Location depends on the specific workshop you are attending. Visit our "Workshops" section for more details. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled NW Photo School workshop starting time. Google Maps can help you plan your drive time if you are coming from out of town.

What happens if it rains?

NW Photo School workshops are held rain or shine. Since this is the Pacific Northwest, learning to shoot in the rain can be a valuable experience! Our workshops are only generally canceled under extreme weather conditions and at the judgement of the workshop instructor.

What if I am lost or know I will be late on the day of my workshop?

If you are lost or late, please call your workshop instructor within 20 minutes ahead of the scheduled meeting time. We will not be answering the phone 15 minutes after the meeting time since we will be leading the workshop at that point.

Please be advised it is your responsibility to be on time, so we would suggest you plan on arriving at least 15 minutes before the scheduled meeting time.

Do I need an expensive DSLR type digital camera?

No. Any non-disposable digital point and shoot or DSLR camera is acceptable.

We will also be reviewing the images you shoot during class on your camera's rear LCD, so a digital camera will be necessary.

Can we buy tickets the day of a NW Photo School workshop?

If you would like to attend a workshop within 48 hours of its' scheduled time, please call 503-740-6170 to check the last minute availability.

Do I have to speak English?

You can speak any language you would like, however we only understand English...and a little Australian slang.

What should I bring?

Digital camera - a point and shoot or DSLR type camera.

A fully charged camera battery with an extra if you have it, enough for 3 hours of shooting. Also, make sure you bring a memory card with enough space for shooting 400 images.

Any extra lenses with lens hoods are good to bring - wide, standard, or telephoto, as well as a microfiber lens cloth to help keep your lens clean if you happen to have one. Please also bring your camera's manual or quick guide, if supplied. If you don't have it, usually you can print it out from your camera brands' website.

Comfortable walking shoes are a must, as well as proper attire for any weather we might run in to- a raincoat or wind breaker would be good. A small notepad and pen for taking notes ( your phone can work for this). Participants are responsible for taking their own notes of the lesson.

No tripods or additional equipment that is not listed.

What should I leave home?

Except for our Oregon Coast Workshop, you do not need to bring a tripod. The less you have to carry, the better!

How should I prepare for my NW Photo School workshop?

Before your workshop begins, and with the assistance of your camera manual or quick guide, locate the controls listed below. Please note: Not all cameras have these control options. YouTube has some excellent online guides to many digital cameras as well. The workshop will not cover locating these controls on your particular brand of camera, so knowing how to access these controls is important to understand in advance.
