|Date: TBD, 2017 • Start Time: 8:30am • DSLR Oregon Coast Day Trip • This all day hands-on photo workshop with professional photographer Pete Stone, is perfect for all levels of DSLR photographers who want to learn how to develop their photo skills for an upcoming vacation or trip, or just want to learn how to take the type of images you've always hoped for. We will help you learn the basic principals of composition, shutter speed & aperture control, available light shooting techniques, time exposures, and much more. This is a class primarily designed to inspire you to shoot more creatively, while exploring the beautiful Oregon Coast, and coming back with some stunning images!
We will begin in the small fishing village of Garibaldi, shooting its fishing boats, its docks and piers, its old train station with historic steam engine, its relic smokestack, its crab pots, and more.
We then take a short journey north to photograph the Three Graces, a collection of rock islands right next to the highway just inside the entrance to Tillamook Bay. After parking along the side of the highway, we can take an easy walk down to the tidepools and rocks surrounding them, capturing images of both the sea life at the water's edge, as well as the rocky spires against the morning sky.
From there, we travel up the scenic coast through the towns of Rockaway Beach, Wheeler, and Nehalem to the beachside village of Manzanita for lunch at Left Coast Siesta, for some great Mexican food.
From there, we follow the coastal highway up the west side of Neahkahnie Mountain and stop at the roadside overlook for another photo opportunity, a spectacular view of the Oregon Coast from hundreds of feet above the sea.
We continue on to Oswald West State Park, and take a short hike ( 0.3 mile ) through the old growth forest along Necarney Creek down to the popular surfing spot known as Short Sands Beach. We'll spend time photographing the piles of bleached driftwood, the surfers ( if present ) the rocky shoreline, as well as take a walk along the sandy beach to the north to shoot Blumenthal Falls crashing into the rocks below. On our trip back to the parking lot, we'll have a chance to shoot the tall trees, the small wooden bridge across the creek, and whatever else visually excites us.
Continuing north, we pass the small village of Arch Cape, and stop at Hug Point Recreation Site. A short stroll down to the beach, and we are soon exploring its dramatic cliffs and soft sands, and walking along the primitive road carved into the rocky headland before the 1920's. Late 19th century stagecoaches had to "hug" the headland even at low tide get around it, giving this spot its name. If the tide permits, we'll make our way around the point to the beach beyond, with its spectacular waterfall & caves for more shooting.
Our last scheduled photo stop is just north from here, up the road to Arcadia Beach State Recreation Site, where dramatic rocky spires jut out of the water's edge. It's a perfect spot for a dramatic sunset ( weather permitting ) or a series of time exposures captured against a stormy sky.
Cannon Beach is just a short drive north, for an evening drink or dinner to round out a successful day of shooting along the North Oregon Coast, before heading back to Portland.
